Another VMware ESX project for KIC Oil will kick-in this month. This will be another fun project for me and thanks to KIC Oil and my Boss because giving me another opportunity to run the project & work with KIC Oil once again in JB. This time I will play again with ESX, UPS Smart Suite SLES10, samba & rsync same like what I did in KL. The only thing different, I need to setup for them IBM DS3300 plus VMware Virtual Consolidate Backup (VCB) and maybe Bacula or Amanda Backup as for their virtual machine backup. ariyossss athlon_crazy |

New experience & new challange for me and my colleague (Lai) which almost make our day so difficult today. First time hands-on with DS3400 we already expect time consuming on the storage allocation. Fibre channel, default IP address, array configuration & zoning for DS3400 really take some time to finish it. We did it with extra careful just want to make sure all the setup & configuration follow our solution design. When the new SAN box is ready, our job become more easily including ESX datastore creation, virtual machine installation & etc. Hey! we concentrate too much on the hardware part today luckly we able to finished it as per our schedule. |

So, KVM will hit the virtualization market very soon. Read here It's indeed a good news. Instead choosing Novell Xen and VMware ESX, now we also can choose KVM. I have to admit both Novell Xen & VMware have their own strength. Novell Xen without doubt getting stronger in the market recently and perhaps when their platespin tool is ready, they have perfect combination of product which can easily beating VMware. Ironically, Platespin can do both P2V and V2P for Linux & windows virtual machine. It's also works with VMware environment, Xen itself and Microsoft Hypervisor. Xen SuSE is open source and free but the downside is, Xen packages such as orchestrator, driver pack & platespin price doesn't come cheap. What's about VMware especially ESX 3.5? VMware being a major, matured & well known virtualization product in Malaysian market for the past 3 years. Deployment, server consolidation plus their tools really make our jobs more easier indeed but that doesn't mean VMware is complete & perfect solution for server consolidation. Their VMware converter doesn't work well when we want to do P2V for linux virtual machine plus, I don't think VMware can do V2P alone without using third party tools and of course this is why Novell platespin is needed. For me, I dont care much with V2P instead DRS, HA & Vmotion already make Vmware become my first choice. Microsoft Hypervisor still mystery to me & I don't want to debate it! :) Let the Microsoft people with their own myths. And now Redhat also gonna realease their KVM solution with IBM as their main allied. I really can't wait to try this KVM as soon as it's enter Malaysian market. Things like bare-metal, near-native, para-virtualized, performance wise, dependencies & bug of course need to be answered before we going to sell it to the customer. What's bout Centos & Fedora ya? Is there any KVM for Centos & Fedora? |

Project - Serawak Scope : VMware ESX (3x Server)
OS : SLES10, Windows 2003 App : mssql, clamav, samba, active directory, high availability, CA Backup. Mandays : 28 Another tough project & customer for me & my new colleague (Lai). I'm okay with ESX & SLES10, but for CA backup, windows active directory & mssql, I feel bit nervous & worry on it. Yes Lai is there and I hope with his windows background & experiences he can help me a lot on the windows part. Come on athlon_crazy! how come team leader can be so worry right? |

Aha.. I'm successfully consolidate my old server to new VMware ESX 3.5 server. Instead I'm running all services on single server (celeron 1.7Ghz) previously, now I manage to isolate different services (squid, firewall, apache, mysql & etc) running on different virtual machines (VM). How many VM I want to create after this really depend on how many resources still available on my dual core machine. As for now, within dual core 2x 2100Mhz & 3GB of memory I supposedly can have about 8 to 10 VM without any issue. I might add another VM for Windows server after this. Why?. It's because I dont have any knowledge on windows server :) |
